What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head. An object that goes through brain tissue, such as a shattered piece of skull, can also cause a TBI. Because every TBI is a little bit different, treatments will vary for each type of brain injury. Some people respond well to treatment, while others will have to deal with the effects of their TBI for the rest of their lives with little or no improvement.

What Are the Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury?

TBIs can show up in a lot of different ways. If you or a loved one might have a head injury, like after a car accident, it’s essential to see a doctor immediately. If the TBI is addressed quickly, treatment will reduce the long-term effects of the damage. Seeing a doctor right away can even prevent a fatality.

Common symptoms of a traumatic brain injury are:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Sensitivity to Light and Sound
  • Loss of Consciousness
  • Headache
  • Unable to Sleep or Sleeping Too Much
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Dizziness or Loss of Balance
  • Dazed, Confused, or Disoriented
  • Ringing in the Ears
  • Memory Problems
  • Inability to Focus
  • Problems With Speech
  • Mood Swings or Mood Changes

Severe traumatic brain injuries will produce much worse and longer-lasting symptoms. They are also more likely to produce multiple symptoms or lead to comas or problems with consciousness.

How Do TBIs Occur?

Traumatic brain injuries are caused by a blow to the head, often in a traumatic accident. The severity of your TBI will depend on the force of the impact.

The most common causes of TBIs are:

  • Motor vehicle accidents, like car accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, and pedestrian accidents
  • Slip and fall accidents can cause a TBI even if you don’t fall from a height
  • Birth injuries from medical malpractice
  • Contact sports like football, boxing, and soccer
  • Domestic violence, assault, and gunshot wounds
  • Military who experienced combat or explosions, which may last a lifetime
  • Workplace accidents like construction accidents

If you or a family member have a TBI from an accident, you might be able to file a lawsuit. It can be hard to say how much a traumatic brain injury will affect a person for the rest of their life, but you may have medical bills and treatments that need to be covered.
